The Lady Zizzers traveled to Rolla on Saturday to open District play against the Lady Bulldogs. With only 10 players available for the game, the Lady Zizzers faced a stiff challenge and they responded very well. Rolla opened the scoring in the 2nd minute of play as Nicole Howard found the back of the net. The Lady Zizzers battled with everything they had. In the 17th minute, after connecting several passes, Chelsey Simmons found Tasha Ugbah near the top of the box. Ugbah let loose a shot that went past Rolla’s Keeper and tied the game at 1-1. Three minutes later, Rolla retook the lead as Wood sent a shot into the net. About a minute later, Wood’s shot off a corner kick deflected off a Lady Zizzer defender and into the goal fora 3-1 lead. About midway through the first half,a Lady Zizzer player got sick and had to leave the field, leaving only 9 players on the field. In a gesture of sportsmanship, Rolla pulled a player off and then a little later pulled another player off and the teams played 9 against 9.

In the second half, the Lady Zizzers continued to fight. In the 6th minute of the half, Carly Shannon drew a foul just outside the box setting up a free kick for Alyce Bender. Bender sent the direct free kick into the corner of the net to cut the lead to 3-2. Two minutes later, Nicole Howard broke into the box and buried a shot to make the score 4-2. Two minutes later Rolla scored again to make it 5-2. The Lady Zizzers continued to give it their all, but they couldn’t cut into the lead. Rolla would add one more goal with about 8 minutes to play, along shot that went just under the crossbar.

The girls played with a lot of heart and never quit trying. They can hold their heads high and should be very proud of each other. Nice job Suzanne Hones, Carly Shannon, Courtney Cox, Chelsey Simmons, Tasha Ugbah, Shannon McGee, Laura Grisham, Alyce Bender, Sarah Hess, and Saralyn Glascock.

In the final regular season games, the Lady Zizzers split with the Parkview Vikings. Parkview picked up a 2-0 win in the Varsity game. After a scoreless first half, Parkview scored in the 8th and 11th minutes of the second half. Jada Hansmann had another good game in goal and defensively the team played much better. The marking up on defense was greatly improved over Monday’s game at Catholic.West Plains couldn’t capitalize on the offensive chances that were created.

In the JV game, West Plains picked up their first win of the season by a score of 2-1. Tayler Smith and Suzanne Hones scored for the Lady Zizzers. Kat Von Allmen earned the victory in goal. The JV ends the season with a record of 1-11-1.

The Varsity will begin District play on Saturday against the Rolla Bulldogs. The game will begin at 10:00am and will be played at Rolla High School.

The two-time defending Class 1 state champion Fighting Irish from Springfield Catholic were too much for the Lady Zizzers on Monday night. Catholic came out shooting and they were rewarded with goals in the 8th, 10th, 18th, and 22nd minutes. Two of the goals came on rebounds that the Lady Zizzers couldn’t clear out of danger. The start of the second half saw a much better effort by the Lady Zizzers. Going harder to the ball, marking up better, and trying to make passes to people’s feet not only made defending easier, but helped create some chances offensively. The Catholic goalkeeper made two nice saves in the half to keep the shutout. Catholic added goals of their own in the 13th, 16th, and 21st minutes of the half. When the Lady Zizzers play hard and play as a team, the results are much better. We struggled with that in the first half and for periods in the second half.

The girls will get another shot at putting it all together on Tuesday as they host the Parkview Vikings in an Ozark Conference match and the last games of the regular season. The Varsity game will start at 4:30pm followed by the JV game.

The Lady Zizzers took on the Branson Pirates on Senior Night on Friday. There are 8 Seniors on the team this year: Anela Auala, Keil Harris, Mary Jones, Shannon McGee, Kassie Roe, Katie Roe, Ashley Smith, and Tasha Ugbah. The girls and their parents were recognized between the JV and Varsity games. In the Varsity game, West Plains controlled a lot of the play in the first half, but the only goal was an own goal that came in the 32nd minute. Tasha Ugbah crossed a ball in front of the goal and a Branson defender, trying to clear it, put it into the goal. The Lady Zizzers had a 1-0 lead at halftime. Despite some chances to increase the lead, things stayed 1-0 until the 28th minute of the half. This time Tasha Ugbah took a pass from Suzanne Hones, took a couple touches and sent a ball over the Branson keeper for a 2-0 lead. Branson didn’t waste much time coming back. After Kat VonAllmen made a good save on a high shot, Branson came back a few moments later. This time Kat made the initial save, but the Pirates were there to knock home the rebound and cut the lead to 2-1. One minute later, Jada Hansmann dribbled past a couple of Pirates and sent a shot into the back of the net to give the Lady Zizzers a 3-1 lead. In the 36th minute of the half, Tasha Ugbah made a little history. Taking the ball herself and beating a couple of defenders, Ugbah scored her second goal of the game to make the score 4-1. The goal was the 37th of Ugbah’s high school career, breaking the record of 36 career goals set by current Lady Zizzer Assistant Coach Jessica (Brixey) Ball.

In the JV game, Branson came out on top 1-0. The Lady Zizzers played pretty well defensively keeping the Pirates of the scoreboard until the 20th minute of the second half. Offensively West Plains did some good things, but didn’t create enough pressure on the Branson keeper.

Up next will be a Varsity only game on Monday at Springfield Catholic. Game time is 5:00pm. Then on Tuesday, the Lady Zizzers will host the Parkview Vikings in the last home game of the season. Varsity will play first at 4:30pm against the Vikings. The Lady Zizzers will open District play on Saturday against Rolla at 10:00am at Rolla High School.

The Lady Zizzers picked up their first Ozark Conference victory of the season on Tuesday as they defeated the Hillcrest Hornets 3-1. Their was no scoring in the first half. West Plains did have a penalty kick late in the half, but the Hillcrest keeper made a nice diving save to keep the game scoreless. In the second half, Tasha Ugbah put the Lady Zizzers up 1-0 in the 3rd minute. Ugbah would pick up her second goal of the game on a direct free kick from about 20 yards out in the 24th minute of the half. Five minutes later, Hillcrest cut the lead to 2-1. Then in the 34th minute of the half, Alyce Bender sent a free kick near the middle of the field, just outside the 18-yard box. Suzanne Hones got the ball, turned and sent a shot past the keeper for a 3-1 lead. That’s how things would end, 3-1 in favor of West Plains.

In the JV game, West Plains and Hillcrest tied 0-0. The Lady Zizzers played pretty good defensively in earning their first shutout of the season. Patsy Moss earned the shutout in goal. West Plains had a number of chances around the goal, but could never finish them off. Overall it was a pretty good night for West Plains.

Next up are games at Joplin on Monday. JV starts at 4:00pm.

The Kickapoo Chiefs came out on top in Ozark Conference soccer action on Tuesday. Kickapoo too the lead in the 2nd minute of play as the Zizzer defense was caught watching the ball. The Chiefs scored again in the 24th minute and the 29th minute. The Zizzers played hard, and did some good things. They didn’t back down in this physical match. In the second half, the Zizzers were more aggressive, but the couldn’t turn that into a goal. Defensively the Zizzers were better, but were unlucky on a couple of balls. Kickapoo scored 3 goals in the second half (22nd, 28th, 31st minutes). The effort was good tonight. There are some things we can do better, but the effort was there.

In the JV game, Kickapoo came out on top 9-0. Individually there were some good efforts, but consistency in the effort as a team was lacking. The Chiefs scored 5 goals in the first half and 4 goals in the second half. Katie Land had a good game as did Sarah Hess.

Up next for the Zizzers will be games at home on Thursday against the Hillcrest Hornets. JV plays at 5:00pm followed by the Varsity.

The 9th Annual Lady Zizzer Classic took place on Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, 2012. The Lady Zizzers won 1 game and lost 2. On Friday night, West Plains took on the Notre Dame Rebels from St. Louis. The Rebels have been frequent participants in the Class 2 Final Four recently and they brought another quality team to the tournament. The Rebels took the lead just 15 seconds into the game as Lexi Butler beat the Zizzer defense on the left side and fired a shot inside the near post. The Rebels struck again in the 15th, 16th, and 20th minutes to take a 4-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, West Plains played a little more aggressively and were able to hold the Rebels to just one goal in the half, that one coming in the 17th minute. The final score was 5-0.

On Saturday morning, the Lady Zizzers faced the Republic Tigers. The Tigers opened the scoring about 15 minutes into the game. A little bit later were awarded a penalty kick after a handball was called on the Lady Zizzers. Republic converted the kick and had a 2-0 lead at the half. The Lady Zizzers didn’t play particularly well in this game. Republic added 3 more goals in the second half to win 5-0 and sen the Lasy Zizzers to the 7th Place game.

In the 7th Place game, the Lady Zizzers took on the Marshall Lady Owls who are coached by WPHS alum, Josh Posegate. West Plains opened the scoring about midway through the first half. Tasha Ugbah raced down the left side and crossed a ball into the box where Suzanne Hones touched it across the goalline for a 1-0 lead. Late in the second half. Marshall drew level and the game went to overtime. After two scoreless ten minute overtime periods, the game went to penalty kicks. The Lady Zizzers kicked first. In the first round, Suzanne Hones made her kick for West Plains and Ariel Smith made her kick for Marshall. In the second round, Ashley Smith made her kick for West Plains and Stephanie Stark made her kick for Marshall. In the third round, Carly Shannon made her kcik for West Plains and Allea Summers kick went wide for Marshall leaving the Lady Zizzers up 3-2. In the fourth round, Alyce Bender made her kick for West Plains to put them up 4-2. In order to keep the shootout going, Marshall had to score on their kick. Erika Espinoza’s shot was saved by Jada Hansmann to give the Lady Zizzers the win. The effort for the Lady Zizzers was much better in the Marshall game. It was a good team effort.

Here are the complete results of the tournament:

In the second meeting of the season between West Plains and Liberty, the Lady Zizzers came out on top by the score of 4-3. The game was as we expected...

In the second meeting of the season between West Plains and Liberty, the Lady Zizzers came out on top by the score of 4-3. The game was as we expected it to be, a hard fought and evenly played. The Lady Zizzers got on the board first. In the 16th minute, Kassie Roe crossed a ball into the box where Tasha Ugbah brought it down and sent a shot into the net for a 1-0 lead. The Eagles would draw level in the 27th minute after West Plains was whistled for a handball just outside the box. Emily Vines took the direct kick for the Eagles and sent it over the head of the Lady Zizzer goalkeeper and into the far side of the goal to tie the score at 1-1. That’s how things would stand at halftime.

The Lady Zizzers would take the lead in the 11th minute of the second half as Ugbah scored her second goal of the game. This one was unassisted as she dribbled past a couple of defenders before sliding a ball into the far side of the goal. Liberty wasted little time drawing level again. One minute later, Kassidy Ledgerwood cut through the West Plains defense and beat the goalkeeper with a shot to make the score 2-2. About a minute later, Tasha Ugbah nearly had a hattrick. She blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced out near the edge of the box. Ashley Smith found the ball and sent a perfectly placed shot just inside the far post for a 3-2 Lady Zizzer lead.

In the 19th minute of the half, The Eagles were whistled for tripping a Lady Zizzer inside the 18 yard box resulting in a penalty kick. Suzanne hones stepped up to take the kick and sent a shot past the diving Liberty goalkeeper for a 4-2 lead. A short time later, Ledgerwood got in behind the Lady Zizzer defense and was pushed down inside the box resulting in a penalty kick for the Eagles. The shot was off target however and the score remained 4-2. In the 38th minute of the half, Sam Henry cut the lead to 4-3 as her shot found the back of the net. That would be all the scoring in the game. When the final whistle blew, the Lady Zizzers were celebrating their second victory of the season.

This was a much better effort than we have had in the last few games. We did a better job of moving and working together. Defensively we changed things up and got some positive results. Jada Hansmann did a nice job in the goal. It was a good team effort and something we hope to build upon going forward.

Next up for the Lady Zizzers and the eagles will be the Lady Zizzer Classic on Friday and Saturday. West Plains opens up against Notre Dame High School from St. Louis at 7:00pm on Friday, while the Eagles will take on Ozark High School at 5:00pm. Other games on Friday will feature Republic against Mountain Home, AR at 5:00pm and Marshall against Waynesville at 7:00pm.

In the 3rd Annual Cancer Awareness game between the two schools, Camdenton came out on top in both games. Both teams have been raising money in the fight against cancer. Final totals for that are not available yet as the teams still have some activities going on. In the Varsity game, Camdenton dominated and won 10-0, scoring all 10 goals in the first 40 minutes. The Lady Zizzers have to learn to work together consistently. That is even more important when playing good teams like the Lady Lakers.

In the JV game, Camdenton came out on top 4-0. The Lady Lakers scored 3 goals in the first half. In the second half, West Plains played much better and created some scoring chances. Camdenton added one goal in the half for the final score of 4-0.

The Lady Zizzers traveled to Springfield Tuesday to face the Glendale Falcons whose only loss on the season was to Neuqua Valley of Naperville, IL who was ranked as high as #17 Nationally. In the Varsity game, the Lady Zizzers started out playing okay and playing together. Glendale’s speed with and without the ball posed problems. Once the Falcons scored in the third minute, things went downhill for West Plains. We stopped playing together and were too often out of position defensively. We were not focused mentally and that lead to a lack of communication and defensive breakdowns. Glendale would take a 7-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, West Plains played a little more aggressively and played together a little more. The Falcons kept attacking and scored three more goal. The last one coming with about 18 minutes left in the game. The final score was 10-0 in favor of Glendale.

The JV game was similar to the Varsity game. The Lady Zizzers struggled defensively and didn’t move well together. Glendale would take a 4-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, Glendale scored 6 more times. The final goal coming with about 8 minutes left in the game. Communication, patience on defense, and seeing the field are areas we need to improve upon. Final score: Glendale 10, West Plains 0.

The Lady Zizzers are off until next Tuesday when they take on the Camdenton Lady Lakers at home.
