The Zizzers traveled to Joplin on Tuesday to face the Eagles in an Ozark Conference Match. The Zizzers had a good chance early as Henry Eldringhoff put a shot off the goal post. However, the game was scoreless until the 20th minute. Joplin earned a corner kick that was heading toward the near post wear a Zizzer player, thinking the ball was going to go out of bounds, moved out of the way and the ball went in the goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Zizzers  didn’t let that mistake get them down. They picked their teammate up and encouraged him. The score would still be 1-0 at halftime. The Zizzers tied the game just 36 seconds into the second half. After a Joplin foul, Layne Sporleder sent a free kick to Henry Eldringhoff whose header went into the upper corner of the goal. Nine minutes later, Eldringhoff struck again to give the Zizzers a 2-1 lead. With ten minutes left in the game, the Zizzers got an insurance goal. This time Layne Sporleder sent a free kick directly into the goal and the Zizzers led 3-1. The Eagles pushed forward to try to get a goal back, but the Zizzers were able to keep them out of the goal. This was the first time the Zizzers have beaten Joplin since 2007. It was good to see the team rally together after giving up an early goal. They never got down on themselves and they fought the whole game.

In the JV game, Joplin got on the board just 12 seconds into the game. The Zizzers failed to control the ball off the opening kickoff. Things got a little better for the Zizzers in the 11th minute. Tyler Ford sent a ball to Devin Girdley who outran the defense and slipped a ball past the Joplin keeper to tie the game at 1-1. The Eagles would get the goal back less than a minute later, taking a 2-1 lead. The Zizzers didn’t mark up well defensively and the Eagles capitalized. Joplin added goals in the 17th, 28th, and 33rd minutes to lead 5-1 at halftime. In the second half, The Zizzers played with more effort and did a better job of marking up on defense. The Zizzers had some scoring chances, including one that hit off the post. Joplin would get one last goal with about two minutes left in the game for a final score of 6-1.

Next up will be games at Poplar Bluff on Thursday. JV will start at 5:00pm followed by the Varsity.
