The Zizzers hosted the Lebanon Yellow Jackets on Tuesday in the first Ozark Conference match of the season. West Plains came out fast and controlled much of the possession early and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Thanks to some good saves by the Lebanon Keeper and some shots that just missed the goal, the game remained 0-0 at the half. In the second half, the Zizzers kept up the pressure and finally broke through in the 71st minute. Layne Sporleder sent a ball near the top of the box where Carlos Lopez brought it down and got around his defender. Lopez sent a shot on goal from about 10 yards out. The keeper got a touch on it, but couldn’t keep it out of the goal. In the 76th minute, the Zizzers earned a corner kick. Layne Sporleder sent the ball into the box where Thanh Dinh knocked it in at the near post. Sidney Jones posted the shutout with the final score of 2-0.

This was a real TEAM effort. The Zizzers played together and played hard. Defensively we played much better than we did in our first two games in St. Louis. We were more composed when we had the ball and we were able to execute some nice passes. We were happy with the scoring opportunities we produced, but we hope to finish more of them in the future. Overall we are very pleased with the performance.

In the JV game, the Zizzers got on the scoreboard quickly. Nic Barraza scored twenty seconds into the game as he knocked in a rebound. The Zizzers kept the pressure on Lebanon, but they couldn’t put another one in the net until the 30th minute. Seth Stiles made some nices moves toward the edge of the goal drawing the keeper out before he fed a pass to Michael Howell in front. Howell buried his shot into the net for a 2-0 lead. In the second half, Barraza would score in the 41st minute for his second goal of the game. Lebanon would get one back in the 68th minute as a shot snuck inside the near post. Barraza was involved in the Zizzers fourth goal in the 70th minute, this time feeding Lucas Shertz whose shot from the top of the box went over the outstretched arms of the keeper to make it 4-1. That would be the final score.

The Zizzers did  a nice job of hustling back defensively and creating chances on offense. It was a good first game for the JV. Like the Varsity game, this was a good team effort.

Next up for both teams will be games at fellow Class 3 District 11 member, the Republic Tigers, on Thursday, September 3rd. JV will kickoff at 4:30pm followed by the Varsity game.
