On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Camdenton, the West Plains Zizzers defeated the Lebanon Yellow Jackets 1-0 in the opening round of District play. The Zizzers had the better of the play for most of the match, moving the ball well. There was some difficulty in the final third though. The Zizzers had a number of chances, but put too many balls over the top of the goal or directly into someone as they played in a crowded box. Lebanon’s best chance to score came in the first half when a corner kick hit the crossbar.
After a scoreless first half, the Zizzers scored the only goal of the match in the 44th minute. Zack Dixon crossed a ball into the the box where Brodie Bender challenged a Lebanon defender for the ball and headed it into the goal. Later in the game, the Zizzers had goal called back for a player being offside. One goal proved to be enough as the Zizzers did a good job defensively against the Yellow Jackets. Logan Huff earned the shutout in goal with a relatively quiet afternoon.
With the win, the Zizzers advance to Monday’s District Semifinal against the #1 seeded Waynesville Tigers. That match will kickoff at 5:00pm in Camdenton followed by Rolla vs Camdenton at 7:00pm. On September 13, The Waynesville Tigers defeated the Zizzers 2-1, getting the game winning goal with 3 minutes left in regulation.
