The #1 Ranked Class 1 Team in the State, the Springfield Catholic Fighting Irish, traveled to West Plains on Monday. The defending Class 1 State Champions wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. In the first minute of play, Catholic caught the Lady Zizzers defense flat and Bekah Bade broke in and found the back of the net with her shot. The Lady Zizzers were able to draw level in the 11th minute as Tasha Ugbah took a pass and dribbled near the edge of the 18-yard box before unleashing a shot that went off the hands of the keeper and slowly rolled over the line for a goal. About 5 minutes later, Nicole Ortega’s shot to the near post put Catholic up 2-1. Bekah bade picked up her second goal with about 9 minutes remaining in the first half on a Penalty Kick after the Lady Zizzers were whistled for a trip in the box.
West Plains did some good things in the first half, but Catholic’s speed and ball movement caused some problems. In the second half, Catholic added two more goals for a final score of 5-1. The Lady Zizzers played hard, but had some inconsistencies in their defensive play. Although, the defense did thwart a number of Catholic offensive opportunities. Sammi Phegley made 20 Saves in goal, including several very tough, acrobatic saves. Communication is an area that needs to get better.
In the JV game, Catholic prevailed 5-0. The first goal came just 45 seconds into the match as the Lady Zizzers left the near post open. Catholic made it 2-0 in the 10th minute. The halftime score would be 2-0. West Plains didn’t play as well as they did against Branson on Friday. The second half saw Catholic add to their lead with goals in the 3rd and 4th minutes. The Lady Zizzers were caught out of position defensively and they weren’t aggressive enough toward the ball. Catholic’s final goal came in the final minute of play as West Plains couldn’t clear a corner kick out of the box.
Next up will be games at Parkview on Tuesday. The Varsity game will begin at 4:30pm with the JV match to follow. The games will be played on the turf at JFK Stadium.
