The Zizzers traveled to Waynesville Tuesday for an Ozark Conference Match against Class 3 District 10 foe, the Waynesville Tigers. The Tigers, coming off a weekend tournament Championship and playing their first home game, were celebrating Senior Night. When the game started, they came out strong and fast. The Zizzers, having been off from game action for a week, were ready for the challenge. Waynesville controlled more of the play and had some good scoring chances, but West Plains held their own and kept things scoreless through the halftime break.

In the 8th minute of the second half, the Tigers’ Kevin Johnson cut across the 18 yard box and sent a shot back toward the post that eluded Zizzer Keeper Forrest Wilson and gave Waynesville a 1-0 lead. The Zizzers didn’t panic. They just kept playing their game and it paid off in the 21st minute of the half. Logan Johnson played a ball to Ethan Hunt who took a couple of touches and sent a low shot inside the post to tie the game at 1-1. The teams continued to battle it out. There were some close calls, but no goals until the 77th minute. Waynesville took the ball on the right side and sent a cross to the back post. Gehrig Haberstock was there to head it in for a 2-1 Tigers lead. The Zizzers kept trying to fight back. A last chance shot from Ethan Hunt went just wide of the goal and that would be the end of the game.

A great effort for the Zizzers. The boys played their hearts out. All 14 players worked hard and showed good things on the field tonight. Let’s keep moving forward boys. We have a tough stretch ahead starting Friday against Fulton at the Parkview Tournament. Our depth will be tested, but I think we are ready for the challenge. The loss drops the Zizzers record to 1-3-0 on the season and 1-2-0 in Ozark Conference play.

In the JV game, Waynesville prevailed 9-0. The JV didn’t play nearly as well as they are capable of playing. Waynesville’s JV team is probably the best JV team we have played this year. The Zizzers were never really on the same page. A lack of communication and not being in good starting positions caused the Zizzers to have problems. The speed with which Waynesville played is something West Plains must adjust to and improve on. Waynesville scored 4 Goals in the first half (4th, 8th, 23rd, 24th minutes) and 5 Goals in the second half (38th, 47th, 48th, 51st, 52nd minutes).

Right now the Zizzer JV team needs to find some consistency. There are times when they are doing some good things, but we have to do them consistently to have success. The season is still young and we have some things to work on. As long as we keep a positive attitude, we will get better. The loss drops the JV record to 2-2-0 on the season. Next up for the JV will be games next Monday at home when the Zizzers host Marshfield.
