Friday’s weather was beautiful, until about 4:45pm. That’s when the lightning came. The first game of the 7th Annual Lady Zizzer Soccer Classic between Waynesville and Mountain View-Liberty had just made it to halftime. Waynesville was winning 6-0. A couple of times it looked like we might be able to resume play, but the weather wouldn’t cooperate and the rest of Friday’s games were canceled.
Saturday morning looked good, but the radar didn’t. Just as the first team took the field to warm up, the lightning came again. With the radar looking bad, and the teams having waited for several hours Friday night, the decision was made to cancel the rest of the tournament. A couple of hours later, the skies cleared. A few teams were still in town and wanted to try to get in some games. After getting some referees and getting the teams to the fields, two games kicked off. Affton faced Sikeston on the Football Field and West Plains faced Moberly on the Soccer Field. Affton was leading Sikeston 2-0 after 52 minutes of play and Moberly was leading West Plains 2-0 after 40 minutes of play. Then the lightning came again and put an end to soccer for the weekend.
It was disappointing because of all the work that went into the tournament and the fact that the teams traveled so far to participate. Unfortunately, the weather is one thing we don’t have any control over. We’d like to thank everyone for their help and cooperation in trying to make things work as best as we could. Good Luck to the teams the rest of the season. We’ll try again next year.
In the game against Moberly, West Plains was facing the #6 ranked team in Class 2. Moberly controlled most of the possession, but the Lady Zizzers did move the ball down a few times, creating a couple dangerous chances. West Plains got 2 shots on goal as a result, but neither of them troubled the Moberly Keeper. On the other end, Moberly kept the West Plains defense and Keeper Sammi Phegley busy. Moberly registered 11 shots on goal, forcing Phegley to make to great saves to keep the game at 2-0.
west Plains is now 5-8-0 on the season and Moberly improves to 14-2-0. Next up for West Plains will be an Ozark Conference matchup against the Kickapoo Chiefs in Springfield on Tuesday.
