Kicking Cancer Challenge Event – Jake Long Speaks To The Lady Zizzers

(Photo by Randy Hunt of R & R Photography)

Part of the Kicking Cancer Challenge is to help raise people’s awareness of cancer. To help accomplish this, we have invited some people to come share their stories.

The first of these speakers spoke to some of the girls today. Mr. Jake Long, a WPHS Graduate and current Teacher and Coach, was gracious enough to share his story. Jake did an excellent job and we want to thank him for taking time out of his schedule to be part of our program. All three of Jake’s sisters (Melynni, Amanda, and Julie) all played soccer for the Lady Zizzers. The Long Family continues to be great supporters of the WPHS Soccer Programs.

We would also like to thank to Randy Hunt for coming and taking some pictures. You can find more pictures by clicking the R & R Photography link above.

Tryouts for the 2010 Lady Zizzer Soccer Team will begin on Monday, March 1. Tryouts will be held after school until 5:30pm. Girls interested in participating must have a current physical with parent signatures and insurance information on file in the Athletic Office or they may be turned in to Coach Schmitt or Coach Brown. You cannot tryout without these items.

Girls should bring tennis shoes, soccer shoes, shinguards, water bottle, and clothing appropriate for the weather each day.

Kicking Cancer Challenge

The West Plains Lady Zizzer Soccer Program and Camdenton Lady Lakers Soccer Program are joining forces to help “Kick Cancer”. The hope is to raise awareness of cancer and to raise some money for the American Cancer Society in their fight against cancer.

The Programs have “Challenged” each other. Each team has set a goal to raise $1500 for the fight against cancer. It is up to each program to decide how they want to do this. One way that both programs will look to raise money will be through the sale of t-shirts (see picture below) in an attempt to have fans help us “White Out” cancer. The t-shirts will be available soon for $10 each (Each team has set a goal to sell 100 shirts, but it would be great if we had to get more printed). If you would like to order one in advance, contact Coach Schmitt or Coach Hunter.

We will have some other things going on to help us reach our goal as well. I will keep you updated on those as we move forward.

The event will culminate when Camdenton travels to West Plains for a soccer game on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. The teams will wear special shirts for the game. Camdenton will wear Yellow and West Plains will wear Purple/Lavender (These are the awareness colors for Childhood Cancer (Yellow)and Cancer in general (Purple/Lavender)). The Goalkeepers will wear Pink because they are required to be a different color than the other players and Pink is the awareness color for Breast Cancer. During the game, we will be using special Game Balls – We will use 3 Pink – The Cure Balls by Select ($4 of the purchase price of each ball is donated to fight for a cure and to raise awareness of Breast Cancer). After the game we will have the girls sign the balls and auction them off as well.

We are also planning some fun “consequences” for the team that raises the least money to make it fun for the teams.

We are also working on getting a speaker to speak with the teams and maybe the fans about cancer, maybe a cancer survivor. We will also have some literature available at the game. We are working with the American Cancer Society and the Howell County Relay For Life Committee to make this a great event.

We would like to invite as many people as possible to help us in our endeavor. Please spread the word to anyone you know. This is a worthwhile cause and something that we hope to make an annual event.

If you have any questions feel free to contact Nick Schmitt at West Plains High School or J.D. Hunter at Camdenton High School.
