Lady Zizzer Classic – Day Two

The clouds rolled in and a little wind kept things reasonably cool most of the day. A few very brief periods of rain during the last games didn’t even get the ground wet. All in all, the day was a success. Things seemed go smoothly, thanks to all the great help. We’d like to thank the ballgirls for their hard work, the parents and other volunteers, the referees, the trainers, and the West Plains R-7 staff for their contributions to a successful tournament.

The day started off with two good matches. At the Football field, the Sikeston Bulldogs came from two goals down to defeat the Parkview Vikings. Parkview opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Shelby Stewart got the goal on an assist from Kelsey Loderhose. Stewart struck again in the 25th minute. Sikeston would get one back before halftime. Abbi Keefer cut the Vikings lead to 2-1 off an assist from Kristin king. Just two minutes into the second half, Keefer tied things up at 2-2. In the 51st minute of action, Keyonna Blissett scored what would prove to be the game winner. Final Score: Sikeston 3, Parkview 2.

In the early game at the Soccer Field, it was a battle of the Tigers as Cape Central defeated Waynesville 1-0. The lone goal of the game was scored in the 25th minute by Cape Central Senior Sarah Uptmor.

At 10:30am at the Football field, West Plains defeated Valley View 5-3, in what was a very entertaining match. The Lady Zizzers came out strong. It would be Katie Shannon putting West Plains in front with a goal in the 8th minute. Whitney Miller drew the Lady Blazers level in the 19th minute. Four minutes later, West Plains went up 2-1 on a Penalty Kick taken by Anela Auala. At the 30 minute mark, Mo Patton caught the Lady Zizzer defense flat and outraced them to the goal before firing a shot into the back of the net to tie the score 2-2. Just six minutes into the second half, the Lady Blazers took the lead on a shot by Natalie Smith that snuck past Sammi Phegley. Four minutes later, Phegley sent a punt near midfield. The ball bounced up and over the Valley View defense and Tasha Ugbah outraced them to the ball and sent a shot just inside the far post to tie the score at 3-3. At the 60 minute mark, Beth Kittle settled a ball took a couple of touches and fired a shot from outside the box that beat the Valley View keeper for a 4-3 lead. After a little break for the referees to regroup and have a little lunch, games resumed at 1:00pm. In action at the football field, Waynesville and Nettleton battled to a 1-0 score with Waynesville coming out on top. The only goal of the game came from Lynette Newcomb off an assist from Oriell Thomas in 8th minute of the second half.

At the Soccer Field, Parkview took on the Liberty Eagles. Despite playing with just 11 players, the Eagles were able to keep things somewhat close throughout the first half. Parkview scored two goals in the half. The first goal came on a Penalty Kick by Jessica Maerz in the 28th minute. Maerz scored again in the 36th minute. In the second half, Parkview would notch 4 more goals. Kelsey Loderhose made it 3-0 in the 10th minute of the half. Jessica Maerz added two more goals in the 13th and 32nd minutes of the half. The final goal came from Loderhose in the 38th minute of the half. Liberty battled to the end, finishing the game with just 9 players due to injury. Final Score: Parkview 6. Liberty 0.

Parkview would have to wait until the end of the Affton/Sikeston game to know where they would finish in the standings. Affton needed a full 10 points to tie Parkview for first place in the White Division. That meant Affton needed a 3-0 win or greater. (The scoresheet has been misplaced on this one so I will provide the details that I remember.) Affton went ahead midway through the first half on a Penalty Kick. I think that was the halftime score. Affton went up 2-0. Just as it looked like Affton would finish in second place, one point behind Parkview, Affton got the third goal. The goal came with just over 3 minutes rremaining in the game. Final Score: Affton 3, Sikeston 0. This meant that Parkview and Affton would tie for 1st Place in the White Division. Congratulations to both teams!

At the football field, Moberly met up with Cape Central and they kept things rolling. Shawn Beard put Moberly up 1-0 just two minutes into the game. Ten minutes later, Kelly Ross made it 2-0. Kennedy Seifert would make it 3-0 in the 17th minute. that’s how things would stand at halftime. Cape Central came out and put some pressure on Moberly to start the second half, but Ross would add her second goal of the game in the 8th minute of the half. Sydney Armstrong who net the final goal for Moberly in the 33rd minute of the half. Final Score: Moberly 5, Cape Central 0. Moberly cruised to 1st place in the Red Division, outscoring their opponents 18-0 in their three games.

A few sprinkles began to fall just before the start of the last games of the tournament. At the soccer field, Valley View squared off with Liberty. Valley View came out on top in this one by a score of 7-1. Natalie Smith scored goals in the 6th and 9th minutes for Valley View. Mo Patton made it 3-0 in the 14th minute. Smith would complete the hattrick with her third goal in the 25th minute. In the second half, Patton picked up goals in the 3rd minute and 13th minute to make the score 6-0. In the 30th minute of the half, Shlley Renegar pulled one back for Liberty to make it 6-1. Patton finished the scoring in the 39th minute of the half, scoring her 4th goal of the game. Final Score: Valley View 7, Liberty 1.

Entering their last game of the tournament against the Nettleton Raiders, West Plains needed 9 Points (2-0 Win) to tie Sikeston for 2nd place in the Red Division. A 3-0 Win or greater would give the Lady Zizzers 2nd place by themselves. Mollie Plocher put West Plains up 1-0 in the 5th minute off a direct free kick. In the 35th minute, West Plains sent a ball across the box where Bre Wright knocked it in. The goal was waved off because the officials called a foul against Nettleton and awarded a Penalty Kick to West Plains. Ashley Martin stepped up to take the kick and sent a strong shot into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. a minute later, after several passes, Dani Valade sent a pass forward for Tasha Ugbah. Ugbah made a move around the goalkeeper and sent an easy ball into the wide open goal for a 3-0 lead. That’s how things would stand at the half. Despite several great opportunities in the second half, West Plains was unable to add to their lead. It was a very good effort for the Lady Zizzers, who moved the ball well. In both games Saturday West Plains looked to take more shots and scored 8 goals asa result. The 3-0 win was enough to give the Lady Zizzers 2nd place in the Red Division, one point ahead of Sikeston. The win meant West Plains won 2 games in their own tournament for the first time. It also marked the first time the Lady Zizzers have brought home a trophy of any kind since capturing a 2nd place finish in Districts in 2003. Coincidentally, Nettleton Head Coach Julie Long was a Senior on that 2003 Lady Zizzer Team. It was a great weekend for the Lady Zizzers, who got contributions from all 21 players that dressed for the tournament. Great job ladies!
