Lady Zizzer JV Picks Up First Win

The Lady Zizzer JV Soccer Team picked up their first win of the season on Monday. The girls played well, connecting passes and creating scoring chances. Defensively they did a nice job too. In the 8th minute of the game, Megan Lowe dribbled in and took a shot from 12 yards to give West Plains a 1-0 lead. In the 29th minute of the half, Lowe would pick up her second goal. This time she picked up a loose ball near the edge of the box and sent a shot on goal. The went through the goalkeeper’s legs for a 2-0 lead. That’s how things would stand at halftime. In the second half, the Lady Zizzers had several good chances, including a Penalty Kick, but couldn’t add to their lead until the 10th minute of the hafl. This time Mary Jones broke in and slid a shot past the keeper for a 3-0 lead. That’s how things would end. The girls played a good team game and were excited to get their first victory of the season.

In the Varsity game, West Plains came out well for the first 15 minutes. Then the tide turned. Alex Cantrell took a corner kick for Marshfield. The kick went past across the front of the goal and past everyone. A Marshfield player sent the ball back across the goal again. Cantrell corralled the ball and with very little angle, sent a high ball over Keeper Sammi Phegley’s head into the far side of the goal for a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, a harmless ball was sent into the box. For the second game in a row, West Plains was whistled for a handball and gave up a Penalty Kick. Cantrell took the kick. It appearred the Phegley had stopped the shot, but the ball spun out of her hands and across the goalline for a 2-0 lead. Marshfield continued to thave the better of the play as West Plains lost a little focus. The last 10 minutes of the half, the Lady Zizzers started to pick things back up, but couldn’t get many balls into the box.

In the second half, West Plains came out in a new formation trying to get things going. The girls played hard and generated some chances. The best chance came about midway throught the half. A West Plains player took a shot that was deflected by the keeper. Ashley Harris followed it up and took a shot. The ball was very close to being over the line and may have been cleared off the line by a defender’s hand. Both teams had some chances after that, including one by Marshfield that Phegley punched over the crossbar and out of danger.

The effort by the girls was good for most of the game. We had a 10-15 minute lull after the goals were scored, but otherwise played hard. The execution in some areas wasn’t where it needs to be. The timing of passes and shots, movement off the ball, and a few other areas need to get better. Up next is a trip to Camdenton on Tuesday. JV game kicks off at 4:30pm with Varsity to follow. Then we host our annual tournament on Friday and Saturday.Go to the Lady Zizzer Soccer Classic page for the schedule.
