West Plains Falls To Kickapoo 2-0

Photo by R & R Photography – Click here to visit their site or click the Zizzer Soccer Photos link in the right hand column

The Lady Zizzers didn’t play as aggressively as they have been in the first half against the Kickapoo Chiefs on Tuesday night. At halftime though, West Plains was only down 1-0. The goal came in the 16th minute, as McKenna Adams sent a high shot to the corner that Keeper Sammi Phegley could just get her fingertips on. The ball fell under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead. That was the only ball that Phegley allowed in during the half, despite facing 14 shots on goal. Phegley made a amazing save on a Penalty Kick late in the half, after the Lady Zizzers were whistled for a handball in the box. Kickapoo controlled the majority of the play throughout the game.

In the second half, West Plains came out more aggressively and challenging more balls in the air. The improved play helped to limit Kickapoo to 9 shots on goal in the half. The Chiefs were able to score in the 25th minute of the half. It was Adams again. Amanda Dominguez cross found Adams open inside the box. Adams shot found the back of the net from 15 yards out. 2-0 Chiefs. That would be all the scoring in the game. Despite the improved play in the second half, West Plains was never able to generate any dangerous chances. Despite the loss, the Lady Zizzers seem to be playing with a little more confidence even against a strong team like Kickapoo.

In JV action, Kickapoo won the game 4-0. The Chiefs scored in the 3rd, 10th, and 30th minutes of the first half. West Plains got caught watching the ball too much and leaving players unmarked. In the second half, the Lady Zizzers played better, keeping Kickapoo off the scoreboard until the 32nd minute of the half.

Next up for both teams will be games Thursday at Hillcrest and then games Friday at Rolla.

Lady Zizzer Classic – Day Two

The clouds rolled in and a little wind kept things reasonably cool most of the day. A few very brief periods of rain during the last games didn’t even get the ground wet. All in all, the day was a success. Things seemed go smoothly, thanks to all the great help. We’d like to thank the ballgirls for their hard work, the parents and other volunteers, the referees, the trainers, and the West Plains R-7 staff for their contributions to a successful tournament.

The day started off with two good matches. At the Football field, the Sikeston Bulldogs came from two goals down to defeat the Parkview Vikings. Parkview opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Shelby Stewart got the goal on an assist from Kelsey Loderhose. Stewart struck again in the 25th minute. Sikeston would get one back before halftime. Abbi Keefer cut the Vikings lead to 2-1 off an assist from Kristin king. Just two minutes into the second half, Keefer tied things up at 2-2. In the 51st minute of action, Keyonna Blissett scored what would prove to be the game winner. Final Score: Sikeston 3, Parkview 2.

In the early game at the Soccer Field, it was a battle of the Tigers as Cape Central defeated Waynesville 1-0. The lone goal of the game was scored in the 25th minute by Cape Central Senior Sarah Uptmor.

At 10:30am at the Football field, West Plains defeated Valley View 5-3, in what was a very entertaining match. The Lady Zizzers came out strong. It would be Katie Shannon putting West Plains in front with a goal in the 8th minute. Whitney Miller drew the Lady Blazers level in the 19th minute. Four minutes later, West Plains went up 2-1 on a Penalty Kick taken by Anela Auala. At the 30 minute mark, Mo Patton caught the Lady Zizzer defense flat and outraced them to the goal before firing a shot into the back of the net to tie the score 2-2. Just six minutes into the second half, the Lady Blazers took the lead on a shot by Natalie Smith that snuck past Sammi Phegley. Four minutes later, Phegley sent a punt near midfield. The ball bounced up and over the Valley View defense and Tasha Ugbah outraced them to the ball and sent a shot just inside the far post to tie the score at 3-3. At the 60 minute mark, Beth Kittle settled a ball took a couple of touches and fired a shot from outside the box that beat the Valley View keeper for a 4-3 lead. Mollie Plocher added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute with a shot from the left side. Final Score: West Plains 5, Valley View 3.

On the soccer field, Moberly took on Affton. Lindsey Boyer put Moberly up 1-0 in the 28th minute. Just before halftime, Shaylyn Cooksey made it 2-0. In the second half, Moberly would score four more time. First it would be Kennedy Seifert in the 8th minute of the half. Five minutes later, Cooksey scores her second of the game. Shawn Beard would pick up a goal on a Penalty Kick in the 27th minute of the half. Kelly Ross would notch the final goal around the 30th minute. Final Score: Moberly 6, Affton 0.

After a little break for the referees to regroup and have a little lunch, games resumed at 1:00pm. In action at the football field, Waynesville and Nettleton battled to a 1-0 score with Waynesville coming out on top. The only goal of the game came from Lynette Newcomb off an assist from Oriell Thomas in 8th minute of the second half.

At the Soccer Field, Parkview took on the Liberty Eagles. Despite playing with just 11 players, the Eagles were able to keep things somewhat close throughout the first half. Parkview scored two goals in the half. The first goal came on a Penalty Kick by Jessica Maerz in the 28th minute. Maerz scored again in the 36th minute. In the second half, Parkview would notch 4 more goals. Kelsey Loderhose made it 3-0 in the 10th minute of the half. Jessica Maerz added two more goals in the 13th and 32nd minutes of the half. The final goal came from Loderhose in the 38th minute of the half. Liberty battled to the end, finishing the game with just 9 players due to injury. Final Score: Parkview 6. Liberty 0.

Parkview would have to wait until the end of the Affton/Sikeston game to know where they would finish in the standings. Affton needed a full 10 points to tie Parkview for first place in the White Division. That meant Affton needed a 3-0 win or greater. (The scoresheet has been misplaced on this one so I will provide the details that I remember.) Affton went ahead midway through the first half on a Penalty Kick. I think that was the halftime score. Affton went up 2-0. Just as it looked like Affton would finish in second place, one point behind Parkview, Affton got the third goal. The goal came with just over 3 minutes rremaining in the game. Final Score: Affton 3, Sikeston 0. This meant that Parkview and Affton would tie for 1st Place in the White Division. Congratulations to both teams!

At the football field, Moberly met up with Cape Central and they kept things rolling. Shawn Beard put Moberly up 1-0 just two minutes into the game. Ten minutes later, Kelly Ross made it 2-0. Kennedy Seifert would make it 3-0 in the 17th minute. that’s how things would stand at halftime. Cape Central came out and put some pressure on Moberly to start the second half, but Ross would add her second goal of the game in the 8th minute of the half. Sydney Armstrong who net the final goal for Moberly in the 33rd minute of the half. Final Score: Moberly 5, Cape Central 0. Moberly cruised to 1st place in the Red Division, outscoring their opponents 18-0 in their three games.

A few sprinkles began to fall just before the start of the last games of the tournament. At the soccer field, Valley View squared off with Liberty. Valley View came out on top in this one by a score of 7-1. Natalie Smith scored goals in the 6th and 9th minutes for Valley View. Mo Patton made it 3-0 in the 14th minute. Smith would complete the hattrick with her third goal in the 25th minute. In the second half, Patton picked up goals in the 3rd minute and 13th minute to make the score 6-0. In the 30th minute of the half, Shlley Renegar pulled one back for Liberty to make it 6-1. Patton finished the scoring in the 39th minute of the half, scoring her 4th goal of the game. Final Score: Valley View 7, Liberty 1.

Entering their last game of the tournament against the Nettleton Raiders, West Plains needed 9 Points (2-0 Win) to tie Sikeston for 2nd place in the Red Division. A 3-0 Win or greater would give the Lady Zizzers 2nd place by themselves. Mollie Plocher put West Plains up 1-0 in the 5th minute off a direct free kick. In the 35th minute, West Plains sent a ball across the box where Bre Wright knocked it in. The goal was waved off because the officials called a foul against Nettleton and awarded a Penalty Kick to West Plains. Ashley Martin stepped up to take the kick and sent a strong shot into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. a minute later, after several passes, Dani Valade sent a pass forward for Tasha Ugbah. Ugbah made a move around the goalkeeper and sent an easy ball into the wide open goal for a 3-0 lead. That’s how things would stand at the half. Despite several great opportunities in the second half, West Plains was unable to add to their lead. It was a very good effort for the Lady Zizzers, who moved the ball well. In both games Saturday West Plains looked to take more shots and scored 8 goals asa result. The 3-0 win was enough to give the Lady Zizzers 2nd place in the Red Division, one point ahead of Sikeston. The win meant West Plains won 2 games in their own tournament for the first time. It also marked the first time the Lady Zizzers have brought home a trophy of any kind since capturing a 2nd place finish in Districts in 2003. Coincidentally, Nettleton Head Coach Julie Long was a Senior on that 2003 Lady Zizzer Team. It was a great weekend for the Lady Zizzers, who got contributions from all 21 players that dressed for the tournament. Great job ladies!

Lady Zizzer Soccer Classic – Day One

Day one of the 6th Annual Lady Zizzer Soccer Classic was a good one. The first game kicked off at the soccer field at 4:00pm between the Sikeston Bulldogs and Valley View Blazers. Sikeston got on the board first, but it took awhile. It would be Kristin King receiving the ball in the middle of the box from a pass by Abbi Keefer. King sent a nice shot into the back of the net from 15 yards out. 1-0 Sikeston. In the second half Keyonna Blissett added an insurance goal with an assist by Kristin King. 2-0 would be the final score.

At the football field, the Parkview Vikings faced off against the Cape Central Tigers in the first soccer match held at Zizzer Stadium. The scoreboard wasn’t working so I don’t have times for the goals. Parkview opened the scoring with a goal from Shelby Stewart. Jessica Maerz would extend the lead to 2-0. Cape Central would cut the Vikings lead in half on a goal by Ashley Butner. I believe the halftime score was 2-1. Parkview would score two quick goals in the half. The first by Kelsey Loderhose and the second by Jessica Maerz. The Final score was 4-1 in favor of Parkview.

The second game on the soccer field featured the Moberly Spartans and the Waynesville Tigers. Moberly scored what would prove to be the game winner in 6th minute. Shawn Beard got the goal on an assist from Kelly Ross. Kelli Westhues would make it 2-0 in the 23rd minute. Allie Jorgensen rounded out the first half scoring with a goal in the 37th minute. Kelly Ross would net a pair of goals to start the half. Her first goal came in the 44th minute and her second in the 49th minute. Shaylyn Cooksey scored on an assist from Tierney Seifert in the 52nd minute. The final goal of the game came from Amy Hudson in the 61st minute. The final score 7-0 Moberly.

Game 2 on the football field was a Homecoming of sorts. Former Lady Zizzer Soccer Player, Julie Long brought her Nettleton Raiders to face the Liberty Eagles. I believe the halftime score was 0-0. The only goal of the game would be scored by Janelle Gaddy, giving the Eagles the 1-0 victory.

The final game of the evening saw the Lady Zizzers take on the Affton Cougars. Affton ’s Katie Aubuchon scored in the 7th minute after making a late run into the box. That’s how things would stand at halftime. The Lady Zizzers played hard and did a pretty good job defensively. Offensively, We were able to move the ball a little bit, but couldn’t get anything dangerous around the goal. In the second half, Katy McAllister made it 2-0 in the 57th minute of play. The Lady Zizzers continued playing well and were trying to do some good things offensively. Rachel Choler headed a ball in off a nice cross in the 71st minute. Just about a minute later, Kelsey Gaia sent a shot into the far side of the net to make it 4-0. That’s how it would end. The girls played a good game and never backed down. Up next for West Plains will be a 10:30am game against Valley View at the Football Field.

Standings after Day 1:

    Red Division

Moberly 10 Points
Sikeston 9 Points
Nettleton 0 Points
Waynesville 0 Points
West Plains 0 Points

    White Division

Affton 10 Points
Liberty 8 Points
Parkview 8 Points
Cape Central 1 Point
Valley View 0 Points

Lady Lakers Take Two From West Plains

The Lady Zizzers traveled to Camdenton Tuesday for an Ozark Conference matchup with the Lady Lakers. In the Varsity game, both teams came out strong and playing a physical game. Although Camdenton had more scoring chances, West Plains played pretty well. The girls are doing some good things. Camdenton scored their first goal in the 21st minute of the game. The goal came on a corner kick by Stephanie Kirvan. The kick was head toward the near post. Lady Zizzer Goalkeeper Sammi Phegley got her hands on the ball, but couldn’t keep it out of the net. Phegley smothered a few other Lady Laker shots, making some terrific saves. The halftime score would be 1-0.

We knew Camdenton would be fired up to start the half and the Lady Zizzers came out hard, but didn’t quite match the level of the Lady Lakers. Camdenton was able to capitalize, scoring two goals in the first five minutes. Three minutes into the half, Haley Baker sent a ball into the middle of the box that Latea LaRUe ran onto and redirected into the goal for a 2-0 lead. Two minutes later, Baker found Stephanie Kirvan for her second goal of the game. 3-0 Lady Lakers. The two quick goals put West Plains in a big hole. If we could have kept them from scoring in the first ten minutes of the second half, it would have been a different ballgame. We just didn’t match their intensity level at the start of the half. The Lady LAkers would add one more goal in the 71st minute. Kayla Utley put the ball in off an assist from Cassie Hale to make the Final score 4-0. There were definitely some positive moments in the game. The corner kick defense was much better than the previous night, the play of goalkeeper Sammi Phegley keeps improving, and we are starting to see the field a little better.

In the JV game, Camdenton came out on top by a score of 4-1. Camdenton went up 1-0 in the 26th minute and a beautifully placed shot to the far corner by Danielle Civey. The Lady Lakers would add another goal just before halftime to make it 2-0. West Plains played pretty well, moving the ball and creating some opportunities, but they weren’t able to finish them.

In the second half, Camdenton scored in the 5th minute to make it 3-0. West Plains got on the board in the 20th minute of the half. Mary Jones scored on a long run to cut the lead to 3-1. Jones was able to get a few shots, but was only able to find the net with one of them. Camdenton scored their final goal with about 10 minutes left in the game. Overall it was a good showing for the Lady Zizzers.

Up next will be the 6th Annual Lady Zizzer Soccer Classic to be held in West Plains on Friday and Saturday. Games begin at 4:00pm Friday and at 8:30am on Saturday. The tournament will feature the West Plains Lady Zizzers and 9 other schools from Missouri and Arkansas. At halftime of the Lady Zizzers game against Affton on Friday night, we will honor the Zizzer Soccer Wall of Honor Class of 2009. Come out and join us.

Lady Zizzer JV Picks Up First Win

The Lady Zizzer JV Soccer Team picked up their first win of the season on Monday. The girls played well, connecting passes and creating scoring chances. Defensively they did a nice job too. In the 8th minute of the game, Megan Lowe dribbled in and took a shot from 12 yards to give West Plains a 1-0 lead. In the 29th minute of the half, Lowe would pick up her second goal. This time she picked up a loose ball near the edge of the box and sent a shot on goal. The went through the goalkeeper’s legs for a 2-0 lead. That’s how things would stand at halftime. In the second half, the Lady Zizzers had several good chances, including a Penalty Kick, but couldn’t add to their lead until the 10th minute of the hafl. This time Mary Jones broke in and slid a shot past the keeper for a 3-0 lead. That’s how things would end. The girls played a good team game and were excited to get their first victory of the season.

In the Varsity game, West Plains came out well for the first 15 minutes. Then the tide turned. Alex Cantrell took a corner kick for Marshfield. The kick went past across the front of the goal and past everyone. A Marshfield player sent the ball back across the goal again. Cantrell corralled the ball and with very little angle, sent a high ball over Keeper Sammi Phegley’s head into the far side of the goal for a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, a harmless ball was sent into the box. For the second game in a row, West Plains was whistled for a handball and gave up a Penalty Kick. Cantrell took the kick. It appearred the Phegley had stopped the shot, but the ball spun out of her hands and across the goalline for a 2-0 lead. Marshfield continued to thave the better of the play as West Plains lost a little focus. The last 10 minutes of the half, the Lady Zizzers started to pick things back up, but couldn’t get many balls into the box.

In the second half, West Plains came out in a new formation trying to get things going. The girls played hard and generated some chances. The best chance came about midway throught the half. A West Plains player took a shot that was deflected by the keeper. Ashley Harris followed it up and took a shot. The ball was very close to being over the line and may have been cleared off the line by a defender’s hand. Both teams had some chances after that, including one by Marshfield that Phegley punched over the crossbar and out of danger.

The effort by the girls was good for most of the game. We had a 10-15 minute lull after the goals were scored, but otherwise played hard. The execution in some areas wasn’t where it needs to be. The timing of passes and shots, movement off the ball, and a few other areas need to get better. Up next is a trip to Camdenton on Tuesday. JV game kicks off at 4:30pm with Varsity to follow. Then we host our annual tournament on Friday and Saturday.Go to the Lady Zizzer Soccer Classic page for the schedule.

Depth Pays Dividends In 2-1 Win

Depth is very important in Spring sports because of all the different activities that take place. For the second night in a row, the Lady Zizzer Soccer Team was without several key players. One player has been out with an injury, four are gone on a choir trip to Tennessee, and tonight a sixth player was missing because of a red card suspension from last night. That meant some players were going to have to step up and play some important minutes, and they played pretty well.

The Lady Zizzers came out playing hard, but it was Liberty who would see the first good scoring chance as Shelly Renegar broke down the right side and sent the ball across the front of the goal. The Lady Eagles weren’t able to get to the ball and it rolled out of play. That would be the only scoring chance of the half for Liberty. West Plains was able to control a lot of the play and created some scoring chances. Bad touches, lack of communication and good goalkeeping kept West Plains off the board. The score would be 0-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Lady Zizzers passing and movement improved and they were able to create a nuber of chances. Unfortunately, a lot of the shots went wide of the goal. In the 11th minute of the half, Katie Shannon took a ball near midfield and dribbled toward the goal. Shannon shot from near the edge of the 18 yard box as the keeper came out to cut down the angle. The ball found the back of the net, giving West Plains a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, Liberty was awarded a free kick from about 35 yards out. Emily Vines sent a long shot that looked like it might tie the game. As the ball was about to drop under the crossbar, Keeper Sammi Phegley, jumped up and grabbed it to preserve the 1-0 lead.

In the 23rd minute of the half, West Plains was called for a handball in the box, giving Liberty a Penalty Kick. Shelly Renegar stepped up to take the kick and placed her shot into the corner of the goal to tie the score at 1-1. West Plains continued to work hard offensively, just missing on some scoring chances. Defensively, the Lady Zizzers did a pretty good job of limiting Liberty’s chances, even after Renegar pushed forward. The hard work on both ends finally paid off in the 39th minute of the half. Ashley harris got a ball on the left side. Harris battled with a Liberty defender before finally getting past her. After cutting in toward the goal, the goalkeeper started coming out and Harris sent a nice low cross to a wide open Dani Valade in front of the goal. Valade took a touch and knocked the ball into the goal to give West Plains a 2-1 lead. That’s how it would end up.

Emily Williams and Kimmie Callahan, playing in just their third Varsity game did a nice job, along with Megan Lowe, Brittany Mills, and Micah Adcock who have seen limmited Varsity action as well. All the girls played hard. They never got down working hard start to finish. Nice job ladies! Next up for the JV and Varsity will be games at Marshfield on Monday. The JV game is scheduled to begin at 5:00pm with the Varsity to follow.

And The Winner Is – Janessa

I received an email this morning from Mountain Home Girls Soccer Coach Debbie Atkinson. She said they had some special things going on for today’s game and wanted to let us know about them. A 4th grade girl in the Mountain Home School District who is a big soccer fan is battling cancer. Her name is Janessa (I hope I spelled it correctly). She goes to Little Rock every 2 weeks for chemotherapy treatments. She wanted to see the Lady Bombers play. She is in between treatments and the weather was nice today, so everything was perfect.

Janessa was made an Honorary Lady Bomber Captain for the game, complete with her own Captain’s armband. The Lady Bombers also presented her with an autographed soccer ball. I told Debbie that since Janessa was a Captain for the game, she should call the coin toss. Janessa called it wrong and we lost the toss (I think she planned it that way), but showing Good Sportsmanship, Mountain Home deferred allowing West Plains to have choice of ball or choosing which half to defend. We also brought along our own gift for Janessa, a jersey signed by the Lady Zizzers. When the girls presented it to her, I told her that since she was from Mountain Home, that maybe we could be her favorite Missouri team. The picture above is Janessa and her Dad with the West Plains Lady Zizzers.

Janessa stayed and watched the game for awhile. She seemed to be kind of overwhelmed by all that went on. I think she was very touched by it all. I know I was. Girls you should be proud of what you were a part of tonight. It will mean more than the score of any game you play. The winner tonight was Janessa! We all wish her luck in her battle.

After all that, there was a game played. Unfortunately for the Lady Zizzers, Mountain Home came out on top. The Lady Bombers controlled the play through much of the half as West Plains struggled to get the ball to their teammates feet very often. The turf played fast and we were a step slow tonight. Mountain Home applied a lot of pressure, but the defense and goalkeeper Sammi Phegley kept them off the scoreboard until the 23rd minute. A long shot by Kirsten Peterson went over Phegley’s head and under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Zizzers finally managed a little offense in the waning minutes of the half, getting two good looks at goal, but firing wide both times.

The Lady Bombers would add to their lead in the 5th minute of the second half as (#7?) buried a shot from close range. West Plains started to play a little better, but in the 12th minute of the half, the Lady Zizzers were given a Red Card for what the referee called “serious foul play – a foul in an obvious goal scoring opportunity”. Because of the Red Card, West Plains was forced to play one player short (10 vs 11). It didn’t take long for Mountain Home to capitalize. Just three minutes later Nicole Bolt found the back of the net to make it 3-0 Lady Bombers. The final tally would come from Peterson in the 28th minute of the half. making the Final Score 4-0. After losing a player with the Red Card, the Lady Zizzers played with more intensity and created a few chances to score. The best chance in the second half came from Megan Lowe, whose shot went just wide of the post.

West Plains drops to 2-7-0 on the season. Next up is a trip to Mountain View on Friday to take on the Liberty Eagles. Game time is set for 4:30pm. There will be no JV game.

Mtn. View Game Time Change

There has been a time change for the Varsity game against the Liberty Eagles in Mountain View on Friday. The start time has been moved up to 4:30pm at Liberty’s request.
