SGFSoccer.com article WP vs Central

On Thursday, the Lady Zizzers traveled to Springfield to take on the Central Bulldogs. Coach Brown and Coach Plocher took charge as I was stayed behind to attend Devin’s Music Program at school. The game proved to be an eventful one as Freshmen Rachel Skelly (Pictured above – Thanks Steve – great photos!) and Ashley Martin saw action in goal, just their second time playing that position (If you count Wednesday’s practice). They were replacing Starting Keeper Jamie Brassfield who injured her knee in Tuesday game against Glendale and Backup Keeper and Leading Goalscorer Michelle Esterle who missed the game to be in the WPHS play on Thursday evening. By all accounts Rachel and Ashley did alright for the first game in goal.

In the game, Central would strike first in the 14th minute as Rachel Skelly stopped a ball, but couldn’t hang on to it. Myriah Hicks came in and put in the net for a 1-0 Central lead. The Lady Zizzers wasted little time getting a goal of their own. In the 15th minute, Amy Armstrong fed Katie Shannon who tied the game with her second goal of the year. The game stayed 1-1 until the second half. In the 6th minute of the half, Central again took the lead. This time Heather Bodenhamer would find the net after a Central corner kick.

Rachel Skelly started in goal and played the first half. Ashley Martin took her place in the second half, allowing Rachel to return tot he field as a Forward. In the 26th minute of the half, the move paid off. Rachel took a pass from Mollie Plocher and put a shot on goal that was stopped by Central’s Keeper, Dessa Loveland, But Skelly kept going and put the rebound in to tie the score at 2-2. The goal was Skelly’s second of the season.

The Game Winner would come in the 30th minute of the half, as Mollie Plocher took a pass from Beth Kittle and fired a strong shot from the right side that found the back side netting. Plocher’s 5th goal of the year ties her for the team lead with Michelle Esterle. Ashley Martin picked up her first career victory in goal. The win brings the Lady Zizzers record to 5-9-0 on the season. Congrats Ladies and Coaches! Next up are games at Marshfield (A team taht is in our district) on Monday. JV plays first at 5:00pm.
